Jenson Button has revealed his frustration with teammate Sergio Perez following a tight battle between the two McLaren drivers in today’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
Button and Perez went head-to-head after the final round of stops, and it was the Mexican driver who managed to emerge victorious after pushing Button off the track at one point.
“The racing out there and was great fun but Checo was too aggressive,” Button told Sky Sports.
“At 300km/h, you don’t expect your teammate to come alongside and bang wheels with you. So that was a bit of a surprise and I’m probably not the only one feels like that.”
Perez had been told to “toughen up” by McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh earlier this week, who believes that the Mexican driver had taken this mantra too far.
“You don’t hit your teammate, though,” Whitmarsh said. “As I said to Checo, endplate to rear tire could have punctured Jenson and broken his front wing. That was over the limit.”This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!
Regardless of the inter-team battle, McLaren will be pleased to have recorded its first double-score of the season. Perez continued to battle through the field to pass Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber for P6, whilst Button could only come home in P10 behind Nico Rosberg.
The team now sits in 7th place in the constructors’ championship, one point behind Force India.
