Red Bull have made a habit of being the first F1 team on the scene when a new F1 track is under construction.

They kept up their streak by getting Sebastian Vettel out to Sochi to explore the contours of its grand prix circuit which will hold the first Russian Grand Prix in 19 months’ time.

Fresh from his victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix Vettel took the opportunity to drive around the circuit, still in the early stages of being built, in a road car.

The street circuit, planned by ubiquitous F1 track designer Hermann Tilke, runs through the site of the complex which will host next year’s winter Olympics in February. After that the organizers will have nine months to prepare for F1’s planned arrival in November.

“By the looks of it, by the drawing, I think it could be a very interesting and challenging track,” said Vettel, adding there was “some fast corners and hopefully plenty of places to overtake”.

Formula One is the latest racing series to venture into Russia. Formula Renault 3.5 held its first race at the Moscow Raceway last year and the DTM (German Touring Car Championship) will also race there this year.
