Silverstone could be set to host this year’s Young Driver Test after teams have agreed to limit the amount of junior running in 2013.
According to Auto Motor und Sport, the circuit that plays host to the British Grand Prix has been selected by the teams as the most logical place to hold the test for drivers who have less than two grands prix starts to their name.
In 2012, there were three tests held for young drivers: one at Magny-Cours (former host of the French Grand Prix), one at Silverstone and one at the end of the season in Abu Dhabi. Teams were permitted to attend one of the three tests. This year, all teams will be attending a single test at Silverstone in July during the summer break.
This will not only allow teams to try out their young reserve drivers, but it will also allow new upgrades to be tested for use during the second half of the season. For fans, the Young Driver Test will become more meaningful as they can compare the times of eleven drivers, with Silverstone seeing just two teams attend its test last season.
The Young Driver Tests has seen many promising youngsters get F1 track time such as Kevin Magnussen and Antonio Felix da Costa.
