Formula One is due to burst into life a few weeks earlier than usual in 2014, with a test scheduled for the middle of January in order to give teams a chance to work with the new engines and regulations.
According to Autosport, the teams have agreed to launch their cars around three weeks earlier than in 2014 (most revealed their cars in the first week of February this year). In turn, this will allow the first test to be held before the end of the month, giving an extended window for development ahead of the new season.
As reported by NBC Sports earlier this week, Losail Circuit in Qatar has lobbied to host a test, with many expecting two of the tests to be held in Asia as the conditions are more suitable for collecting data. Subsequently, the opening round of the season would be held in Bahrain, with some expecting the grand prix to become a night race.
Teams have already agreed that there will be four tests instead of three in 2014, giving additional time to get used to the new engines. Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn believes that all of the teams would be in favor of the move.
“I think every team is going to want to be out early with the new engine and understand it,” Brawn told Autosport.
The early start may place greater strain on the teams during the off-season, with the regular three week shut down possibly being sacrificed. The late finish in November means that if teams are to compete for the championship next year, they will have to shift focus to their 2014 car early, thus taking resources away from the current championship in.
