Talladega Superspeedway has been dealing with steady rainfall throughout the weekend, but the NASCAR Sprint Cup Aaron’s 499 appears more likely to take the green flag at its scheduled start time of 1:07 p.m. ET.
The Weather Channel is forecasting just a 10 percent chance of rain at race time, but that chance spikes considerably to 60 percent later on in the day. Yesterday, the wet stuff forced a delay of three hours before the NASCAR Nationwide Series event finally got underway; the wild Aaron’s 312 race would end with only flickers of sunlight remaining.
Additionally, rain caused the cancellation of Friday’s Cup qualifying session and forced NASCAR to set the grid for today’s event according to speeds posted in the weekend’s first practice. Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Jr. are on the front row.
The problematic weather has made the weekend an adventure for campers at the track. Pictures of campgrounds submerged in water have circulated around Twitter, but it doesn’t sound like most fans were planning on abandoning their efforts to enjoy the races.
“You’ve got too much invested in coming over here. You might as well stay and wait it out. See what happens,” said Atlanta resident and camper Jay Bryant to the Anniston (Ala.) Star on Saturday. “Even if you only get half the race in, you’ve got to try.”
Spoken like a diehard.
