Allmendinger will race for Penske in Detroit

AJ Allmendinger’s return to open-wheel racing at Barber in April came with several post-scripts: the confirmation of his Indianapolis 500 program, the addition of Long Beach after Barber, and a hint from team owner Roger Penske he’d run Penske’s promoted race weekend in Detroit.

The Friday before practice and rookie orientation begins at Indy, Allmendinger has officially been confirmed for the Detroit doubleheader in Penske’s third car. Like the race, he’ll be sponsored by Quicken Loans, per the Associated Press’ Jenna Fryer.

Penske Racing president Tim Cindric discussed the plans the team had for Allmendinger at Barber.

“You put the plans in place and they you have to make the decision whether to pull the plug or not,” Cindric said there. “We won’t run him at Brazil, so it will be Long Beach and then Indianapolis, and we’ll see after that. We’ll probably end up with a Penske affiliate of some kind (for sponsors). We’re open to sponsors.”

Allmendinger is one of four rookies competing at Indianapolis, along with Carlos Munoz (Andretti Autosport), Conor Daly (A.J. Foyt Racing) and Tristan Vautier (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports). Daly will miss the opening weekend in Indy for GP3 commitments in Barcelona.
