Sky Sports Formula One analyst Martin Brundle believes Pirelli’s tires have taken over the discussion of the sport more than they should have.
Writing on Twitter Friday morning, the ex-driver expressed appreciation for Pirelli as a whole since they re-entered the sport in 2011. But this year, they’ve gone too far with compound changes, and further revisions now planned for Montreal – instead of Silverstone as originally planned – are necessary.
“Some people missing the point. Multi-stop F1 strategies used to require banzai qualy style laps and unassisted overtaking to make them work,” said Brundle. “Not nursing the tires (even in qualy) on a four stopper to avoid needing all six available sets during the race.
Brundle said the “best driver” element of F1 has been reduced with the tire focus.
“I want to enjoy and spot the fastest current and future drivers, not only the best tire preservers. 90 percent of a race event is talking tires now,” he added. “Pirelli have done a great job for F1 overall, I applaud them. We needed more spice, but it’s too much right now and I’m pleased its changing.”
