As James Hinchcliffe tweeted after his dramatic victory in the most recent IZOD IndyCar Series race at Sao Paulo, Brazil, “I don’t always finish races, but when I do, I prefer to win.”
“Rollercoaster” may be the optimal word to describe the Canadian fan favorite’s season so far. It began at St. Petersburg, Florida with his first career IndyCar triumph. But then at Barber Motorsports Park, he ran into early problems and was forced to watch most of the race play out from his wounded car. Round 3 at Long Beach saw him crash out while trying to move through the field, but his fortune turned positive again in Brazil when he took the win with a memorable, last-turn pass of Takuma Sato.
Starting ninth, Hinchcliffe figures to be a threat for next weekend’s Indianapolis 500 as part of Andretti Autosport’s five-car armada for The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he spoke to NBC Sports Network’s Kevin Lee about his “500” preparations and his season so far.
