Curb problem claim “absolute rubbish” – Warwick

Derek Warwick, former F1 driver and president of the British Racing Drivers’ Club which runs Silverstone, rubbished claims the tire failure seen in yesterday’s race were caused by problems with curbs.

“Absolute rubbish – these curbs have been in since 2009 and we have had thousands and thousands of cars go over these curbs and they have been absolutely fine,” Warwick told Sky.

During the race drivers were told to avoid using the curbs in several corners as teams suspected they might be contributing to the problems.

The curbs at The Loop and Becketts were under scrutiny as all five of the tire failures during the race occurred immediately after these bends.

But Warwick is convinced there was nothing wrong with them: “We have had them checked by the FIA and they conform fully with the FIA.”

“I think the problem is that we had the secret three-day test for Mercedes a few weeks ago – that test was to build a tire that was strong enough for the British GP.

“They came up with a tire and the teams then had to vote on bringing that new tire to Silverstone and three teams voted against bringing the new tire to Silverstone. So the teams need to look at themselves – they made the decision not to bring the new tire.

“I kind of blame Pirelli, but they did their best to bring a new tire to Silverstone and three teams voted against it.”

    The FIA put Pirelli in this box by wanting more pitstops which you can’t blame them it does create a good show. What’s up with when Pirelli says “we’re going to need a different tire for Silverstone” and the teams shoot them down. Doesn’t even make sense why they get a say with a sole supplier anything they decide in the name of safety should be done no questions, no votes.

      Stop believing what you read, please.

      No one, not the fans, the fia, Bernie, no one asked for Pirelli to make a poor product three years in a row.

      I hold FOM and Bernie to blame simply because it was their decision to let an unprepared supplier into the sport. Do a web search about Pirelli going to Bridgestone and begging for help because they couldn’t get their tires to bond to the carcass or get the sidewalls to work properly. Do I need to say Bridgestone declined to help them and F1 has suffered ever since?

      I do agree about you final sentence, totally. What we are seeing is what happens when the teams runs the series. We are experiencing the fallout from not having a real Concourde Agreement or Technical Working Group. What we have is Bernie and 5 teams making up the rules as they go along and a tire supplier that is trying to save a few bucks by using steel belted radials in F1.

    which 3 teams voted against the new tires??

      Lotus, Ferrari, and Force India.

      Massa had two tire explosions last weekend and Alonso had a puncture during the race (he pitted straight away).
