Pippa Mann has been tabbed to take over Dale Coyne Racing’s No. 18 Honda for this weekend’s Pocono IndyCar 400 at Pocono Raceway. The British competitor was last seen in the No. 18 at Texas Motor Speedway, where she was forced to bow out after just two laps due to an engine failure.
“The deal happening this weekend to put me back in an IndyCar really does come down to Dale Coyne,” said Mann, who will make her third start of the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series season (she also competed for DCR at the Indianapolis 500).
“Since the schedule was first announced, I’d wanted to run [at Pocono] if possible, especially with the Open Test, which would hopefully give me the opportunity to learn the track. The goal was to find a way for me to get in the car, and Dale worked tirelessly with us to make this race weekend happen. I’m incredibly grateful to him for the opportunity to get back in the No. 18 car, and I’m looking forward to carrying the Cyclops Gear colors again for the Pocono IndyCar 400.”
Neither Mann nor DCR teammate Justin Wilson had tested at the 2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle” prior to this afternoon’s Open Test session. Going into the session, Mann dubbed Pocono as a track that was “so different from anywhere [she has] been before.”
“I am expecting that we will have to make some pretty interesting compromises on the set-up, and working out which corners are the crucial ones to be fast, and to be able to follow and pass in the race will be important,” she said. “I’m looking forward to getting out on track and finding out more about ‘The Tricky Triangle’ first hand!”
The aforementioned Open Test ended with Marco Andretti topping the morning charts at 219.282 miles per hour, ahead of Helio Castroneves (218.716), Ryan Hunter-Reay (218.128), Tony Kanaan (217.918) and Will Power (217.782).
