Pirelli predict two-stop race at German GP

Pirelli have predicted that today’s German Grand Prix will be a two-stop race after analyzing the data collected in practice and qualifying so far this weekend.

The Italian supplier has come under fire following the multiple failures that occurred at the British Grand Prix, but changes have been made for this weekend including a new tire construction as well as a ban on ‘tire swapping’ for the teams among other guidelines issued.

“There was a difference of over a second between the medium and soft compounds, which obviously had an effect on the chosen strategy for qualifying, as it will do during the race tomorrow,” Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery explained in a statement. “The soft tire was definitely the tire to qualify on but those who start the race on the medium tire might be able to gain track position when the soft tire runners come in for their first stop earlier than them.”

Hembery believes that strategy will be decisive at the Nurburgring, which will please Ferrari and Lotus who failed to trouble the front row of the grid yesterday.

“We’re expecting most people to stop twice, with the emphasis on the medium tire during the race: and that will be at the heart of the race strategy that the teams plan tonight. Tomorrow the drivers have plenty of opportunity to make up places through a good strategy, even if they are not as far up the grid. Wear, degradation and performance are in line with our expectations and with dry weather expected again tomorrow, plus a wide variety of strategies at work, we should see a good race.”

Pirelli believe that the first stops on the soft tire will come on lap 6, whilst the medium runners will be able to go until around lap 27.

    So it is 6 laps on the soft tires and 27 laps on the medium tires. That one second a lap faster time on the soft tires is not going to mean much if it results in several additional pit stops. It would seem that it would only make sense to go to the soft tires if you have to pit near the end of the race so that you have the extra grip to make some moves as the race is winding down and do not need to worry about adding a pit stop.

    2 Drivers in the points managed a 2 stopper, 5 cars that saw the finish line did two stops.

    The majority did 3. So once again Pirelli are talking out their arse.
