The term “Flapgate” will never have the chance to take off.
NASCAR ruled Wednesday that the 31 teams found to have had noncompliant roof flap spacers at Daytona International Speedway will not be penalized following what it deemed a “thorough review.”
Sixteen Sprint Cup and 15 Nationwide Series teams had their spacers confiscated last Thursday.
“We examined this from every aspect we possibly could and determined that there would be no penalties involved,” Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition, told NASCAR.com. “Based upon our inspection and subsequent review, it was our determination that the functionality and safety aspects of the roof flaps were not compromised and the on track competition would not be impacted.”
A litany of potential puns based on the “31 flavors of penalties” – one of which was suggested this morning by the brilliant NASCAR and IndyCar satirist known only as @nascarcasm, below – will now be averted as a result.
