Fernando Alonso has admitted in an interview that Formula One does scare him from time-to-time, especially when driving in wet conditions.
Mortality is a topic that very few drivers dare to speak about, but Alonso was happy to talk about his fears when driving during an interview with German broadcaster RTL.
“Yes, I’ve been scared sometimes,” Alonso said. “Definitely races in the wet when you lose all visibility. It’s a critical moment. And then at times like we have seen recently with the tires that did not hold, you get a respect for the speed and a sense of danger.”
However, the Spanish driver showed no signs of these fears giving him second thoughts about racing in F1, explaining how this speed was important to him.
“Without speed it would be hard to understand a single day. I like speed, I like doing everything in a hurry.”
Alonso currently trails Sebastian Vettel by 34 points in the drivers’ championship as the Ferrari driver goes in hunt of his third world championship, having taken back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.
