Tony Stewart had a second successful leg surgery on Thursday after he’d suffered his broken tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash Monday night.
He had his first surgery on Tuesday, primarily to stabilize and clean the Grade 2 injury. This surgery, performed by a specialist in North Carolina, involved inserting a metal rod inside the tibia, pressing it to its anatomic position.
The team report did not list a discharge date from the hospital.
Earlier this week, Stewart Haas Racing announced Max Papis as a temporary fill-in for Watkins Glen this weekend in the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, but they have not yet determined further replacements. Team manager Greg Zipadelli said in a media teleconference that he didn’t think Stewart could get hurt.
But, contrary to Zipadelli’s estimation, Stewart is human, and will need human recovery time from these injuries.
