Sebastian Vettel has thanked his team for producing such a fantastic car to allow him to dominate throughout the Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza, culminating in a fine victory on Sunday to claim his third win at the circuit.
The German driver qualified on pole position and held the lead off the start despite a lock-up heading into turn one. However, he managed to open up the gap to closest rival Fernando Alonso as the race wore on, eventually easing home in the final few laps to claim his fourth win in the last six races.
“Usually this is one of the toughest tracks we go to but this year the car has been absolutely fantastic,” Vettel said on the podium after the race. “It’s very great to win here.”
Red Bull’s record at Monza has been patchy in the past, scoring just one podium before in the form of Vettel’s win back in 2011. However, this year the team managed to achieve a double-podium with Mark Webber finishing third behind Fernando Alonso.
However, the podium ceremony was once again marred by booing for Vettel, with the crowd at Monza baying for home favorite Alonso during the interviews after the race. Vettel stated that he was unmoved by their actions, though, understanding that the crowd in Italy was only really interested in the Ferrari drivers.
“You can hear the difference when you don’t win here in a red suit. I get a lot of that [booing].
“Most people you can see, they’re dressed in red, they’re here for Ferrari. You can see some blue [Red Bull]caps as well, they’re very happy.”
Vettel now enjoys a fifty-three point lead at the top of the drivers’ championship, meaning that with just 175 points remaining, it will take a remarkable turnaround for the German driver not to win a fourth successive championship this season.
