Jeff Gordon has been added to NASCAR’s 2013 Chase for the Sprint Cup as a 13th driver, on Friday, September 13. Because naturally, you can’t make this stuff up.

NASCAR CEO Brian France and President Mike Helton had a brief press conference Friday afternoon at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill. and mainly cited “extraordinary circumstances” based on the events in the last 10 laps at Richmond last week.

“Based upon the totality of our findings, to be fair and equitable we decided that adding a 13th car to this year’s Chase is the appropriate action,” France said in a statement. “Beginning with our decision Monday, which resulted in an unprecedented team penalty, and continuing with further examination of actions involving two other race teams, it is clear to us that attempts to manipulate the results impacted the Chase field. The integrity of our sport remains the cornerstone of NASCAR, and our actions this week speak to our commitment to ensure a level playing field for all competitors.”

France added during the press conference, “It wasn’t one set of circumstances that led us to this decision. It’s multiple set of circumstamces. Any one of them could have given a disadvantage. It was overwhelming in our view that it just wasn’t fair.”

Additionally, Helton confirmed Penske Racing and Front Row Motorsports would be placed on probation for the remainder of the season for the radio communications from Front Row regarding David Gilliland, its driver, and Joey Logano, Penske’s exchanging positions late in the race.

A mandatory meeting will be held with drivers, crew chiefs and owners on Saturday to clarify rules and evaluate the ethics of the rules going forward for the series.

A tweet from Gordon expressed his understandable delight.

    Dear Mr France,
The “integrity” of NASCAR has been ruined for a long time. You are quickly becoming a joke among true motor sports enthusiasts.

One action left to go…Boyer should be removed from the Chase. He is the reason for all off this yet he has received zero penalties.

make up and change rules as you go along

Nascar is a joke. Plain n simple!

Look up the 1995 season finale in Atlanta. Hendrick Motorsports entered a 4th car that would immediately pull out if the race if Jeff Gordon got into trouble. There is nothing “extraordinary” or new about team orders in NASCAR.

It didn’t matter because there was no Chase.

Not a soul brings up that Jimmie wrecked 10 seconds after JG got in position for the lucky dog…..

As a JG fan,I’m not at all pleased with the way Gordon got in,but even less pleased with the way he got beat out.multiply my displeasure by 1000 times and you’ll see my feelings about the way Brian France has run this sport into the ground over the last 10 years.

Done! The 2013 Chase will not be watched by this discouraged fan. See you in 2014…Maybe.

Nascar made the right move, and everyone that was adversely affected by MWR’s shenanigans got their due. I think Nascar realized Boyer had to obey orders or lose his ride, so he stays in the Chase.
    Go Jimmie!!

Well that just about does it. NASCAR is officially a joke. Credibility shot. Who is next to get in Juan Pablo Montoya? Why not. Hell just let the whole field in because there is no way of knowing what drivers were actually screwed at Richmond. If they tried hard enough I’m sure they could justify letting Richard Petty and David Pearson join the chase.

I have never gone to a NASCAR race in the flesh, but I would pay to go see something like that!

They’ve also decided to let Hulk Hogan, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin in this years “chase”….

What a complete joke! They already were losing me at debris caution and lucky dog.

This is why there shouldn’t be a chase… Just make a decent points system.
