A race recap of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour race this weekend could be done with words, or, it could be done with video.

We’re choosing the latter on this occasion.

The first clip is a great scrap between Bernd Schneider in an Erebus Motorsport Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 and Shane van Gisbergen in a Darrell Lea-run McLaren MP4-12C. The commentary is provided via Radio Le Mans’ John Hindhaugh, occasionally known as “Hindy,” and veteran Australian announcer Richard Craill, better known as “Craillsy.”

The second clip is the final laps of the race, as another Mercedes, this time the HTP-run effort driven by Maximilian Buhk battled intensely with Australian V8 Supercars legend Craig Lowndes (pictured right) in the Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 458 GT3.

The Ferrari won, in the hands of Lowndes, Mika Salo, John Bowe and Peter Edwards. How they won, we’ll go to the tape.

The race was absolutely brilliant. It was so nice to have the wonderful voices of Radio Le Mans calling a race again, especially Hindy, especially when Hindy was absolutely losing his mind. Great track, great cars, great drivers, all racing hard for the entire 12 hours. You couldn’t ask for better.

And here’s the important bit: just like the Daytona 24, there was a 10 minute sprint to the finish due to a late safety car. But in this case, there was an actual wreck with an immobile car just off the racing line, with fluid all over the track, and even then race control explored every option for keeping the race green while dealing with the incident. I feel that the safety car was justified given the circumstances, and its amazing how positive the reaction is to this race, where the organizers cared about the racing rather than a contrived, scripted, gimmicky finish, compared to the reaction to the Daytona 24. And yet both had similar finishes. Take note IMSA: the fans are smarter than you give them credit for. They know good racing and they know lame gimmicks. Treat the fans with respect and you’ll get positive word of mouth. Screw them over by trying to manipulate the race, and they’ll revolt.

Boy, that was wonderful. And what a track! You can see why they call it Mount Panorama! I love the Bathurst 1000 but have never seen such great video. Thanks for this amazing treat.
