VIDEO: Marcus Ericsson ends qualifying in the wall

Jun 7, 2014, 2:20 PM EDT

Marcus Ericsson’s endured a miserable qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix after he spun on his final lap in Q1, and he eventually finished up in 21st position.

The Swedish driver was negotiating the second chicane at turns eight and nine, but took the corner with too much speed. As a result, he lost the backend of the car and spun backwards into the wall.

Although the crash would have been disappointing for the driver and the team, it did little to change Caterham’s final result. The backmarker team has been well behind nearest rivals Marussia all weekend, and Ericsson’s teammate, Kamui Kobayashi, finished almost one second behind Jules Bianchi.

Ericsson will not start tomorrow’s race from last, though, after Esteban Gutierrez was forced to miss qualifying because of a crash in FP3 that warranted a chassis change.
