Schumacher’s alleged medical files stolen, says his management

Jun 23, 2014, 3:05 PM EDT

The management for seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher – who recently came out of a months-long coma after his skiing accident in December – has released a statement saying that someone is trying to sell what are alleged to be his stolen medical files.

The statement discloses that the Schumacher camp can’t say if these files are legitimate, but that it will press charges against any media outlet that chooses to use them for publication.

It does not make clear whether the notes came from his time at Grenoble (France) Hospital or at University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he has been transferred to begin his rehabilitation.

Here is the full statement:

“For several days stolen documents and data are being offered for sale. The offeror claims them to be the medical file of Michael Schumacher.

“We cannot judge if these documents are authentic. However, the documents are clearly stolen. The theft has been reported. The authorities are involved.

“We expressly advise that both the purchase and the publication of such documents and data is forbidden. The contents of any medical files are totally private and confidential and must not made available to the public.

“We will therefore, in every single case, press for criminal charges and damages against any publication of the content or reference to the medical file.

“We trust for your understanding.”

Schumacher sustained a severe head injury while skiing at the Meribel resort on Dec. 29, 2013. While at Grenoble, he underwent several surgeries and was put into a medically-induced coma; doctors began to slowly bring him out of it in January of this year.
