Ricciardo all smiles after claiming podium finish (VIDEO)

Jul 6, 2014, 2:45 PM EDT

Daniel Ricciardo rarely needs an excuse to smile, but his grin was wider than normal today after he finished the British Grand Prix in third place.

The Red Bull driver started down in eighth place after a wet qualifying session yesterday at Silverstone, and had to work hard to make his one stop strategy work. As teammate Sebastian Vettel got stuck behind Fernando Alonso, Ricciardo was able to forge ahead and eventually see off Jenson Button by less than a second come the flag.

“This is the best third place I’ve ever got,” he explained. “I’m not normally ecstatic with a third but I really am today, obviously to redeem myself from yesterday and also the fact that I don’t think we had an awesome race car today, but we made it work.

“We used the cards that we had and played the game well, so I was really happy to make a one stop work. For the last two laps, I saw Jenson coming and thought I was probably going to be a bit vulnerable but we held on.”

Speaking to NBCSN’s Will Buxton after the race, Ricciardo said that he had exceeded his own expectations since joining Red Bull at the beginning of the year, having claimed three podium finishes and a race win in 2014.

Ricciardo is proving over and over that he’s the #1 driver at Red B.S. Racing. Now he needs to get the Hell outta of that cesspool environment and in with a reputable team. Ricciardo at Sauber with Mateschitz financial for a couple years and then the full Red Bull branding would be a win-win for all of the scrupulous folks involved.
