As the World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas hits its fourth day, part-time NASCAR driver Jason White is still in the hunt for a hefty $10 million prize.
White, who earned 21 Top-10 results in the Camping World Truck Series from 2009-2012 and has raced in three national series events this year, is among the final 450 competitors in the WSOP.
There were 6,683 of them when the tournament began. The WSOP is scheduled to run through Monday.
White’s exploits in Vegas are also earning the attention of one of the top poker players in the world. Phil Hellmuth, who won the WSOP main event in 1989 and has earned 13 WSOP championship “bracelets” in his career, has been impressed:
In a recent interview with PokerListings.com, White said that poker and racing have a fair bit in common.
“Obviously, it’s a lot of luck and a lot of skill,” he said to the site. “You have to be in the right place at the right time. It’s a lot like racing that way.
“In Daytona, if you’re aren’t in the right place at the right time then you get in a wreck. Just like racing, you just want to beat everyone else in poker.”
White also said that poker is a favorite pastime for many of his peers in the garage, and he’s hopeful to make a good impression on their behalf.
“A lot of NASCAR drivers love to play poker – we just don’t get to do it too much,” he said. “It would be great to make a run in the Main Event.”
