Jenson Button is riding high heading to this weekend’s German Grand Prix after matching his best home race result at Silverstone last time out.

The Briton finished in fourth place, narrowly missing out on a podium finish behind Daniel Ricciardo. Although he feels that the team is not yet able to fight at the front, he was pleased to have exceeded expectations at the British Grand Prix.

“I wasn’t that disappointed,” Button said when asked about missing out on a top three finish. “It was a good weekend for us. I think for us to qualify third and finish fourth is a lot better than what we expected going into the weekend, and it’s very unusual that you have a weekend where you achieve more than you set out to do.

“So yeah, it’s not bad, definitely helps the atmosphere within the team. We have some parts for here, aerodynamic parts and also some ideas for setup here that we haven’t before, so hopefully another little step.”

McLaren is currently going through a rough patch, enduring its worst campaign since 1980 last season. 2014 has not been a great deal better, but Button still believes results like the one we saw at Silverstone are key for keeping spirits up.

“It’s always nice when you overachieve, especially in your home country as well,” he said. “I think as a team we should be happy with what we did, but the answer always ends with “it’s not where we want to be”, of course, but you’ve got to enjoy [it] when you feel you’ve done more than your car will let you do.

“I think we did a very good job as a team, and we should enjoy that and look forward to trying these new parts this weekend.”

The 2009 world champion is yet confirm his future plans, amid speculation that he could leave McLaren and possibly Formula 1 altogether at the end of the season.
