Restarts have not always been kind to Jeff Gordon in recent years. And earlier in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the four-time Sprint Cup champion had struggled on those, losing valuable positions on a track where passing can be scarce for stock cars.
Perhaps that was why, despite having a car capable of victory, he had some trepidation as one more restart loomed with 17 laps left.
“…My restarts had been just terrible all day and it came down to that final restart – and I can tell you, I did not have a tremendous amount of confidence going into that final restart,” Gordon said this morning on The Dan Patrick Show.
But Gordon managed to make the outside lane work and go around Kasey Kahne to take the lead. It was the moment of the race, as Gordon motored away and became the first five-time NASCAR winner at Indy.
In addition to talking about the race with Patrick, Gordon addressed other topics such as the first skills to “go” as a driver ages, whether he’d allow his young daughter to become a NASCAR racer, and if he’ll ever rock a mustache again as he did earlier in his career.
You can watch the full interview in the clip above. Remember to tune in to The Dan Patrick Show every weekday morning at 9 a.m. ET on NBCSN.
