NASCAR AMERICA: Investigators still piecing together facts (VIDEO)

Aug 12, 2014, 6:46 PM EDT

Today, Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff Philip Povero announced that the ongoing investigation into Saturday’s fatal sprint car crash that involved NASCAR driver Tony Stewart could continue for at least two more weeks or longer.

NBC News correspondent Kristen Dahlgren has been in Ontario County covering the investigation. Today, she provided an update to NASCAR AMERICA that also includes reaction to Saturday’s events from sprint car racer Paul Kinney, who raced with Stewart and the late Kevin Ward Jr. that night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

You can watch the report in the clip above.

I hate to break it to anyone but law enforcement officials, barring a confession from Tony Stewart himself, does not have any evidence for criminals charges other than the two videos already released.

Prediction…Tony Stewart will opt not to ride the remaining four races of the season not only it is right thing to do but also the fact that he is basically out of the race for the championship this year.
NASCAR will do an investigation of the trajedy and find the death of Mr. Ward an accident and business as normal next February.

Meanwhile, many fans will have left the sport for good.

I think everything you said will come to pass.

Stewart has everything to lose and nothing to gain by getting back into any race car for the rest of this season.

You can tell in the video that he gunned the engine and spun the tires just as he was passing Ward. Ward was a moron to even put himself in that situation. But Stewart isn’t entirely innocent either. He tried to spin dirt on him, and it backfired.

Again this isn’t pavement, that’s how you take evasive action in a sprint car, you can’t just turn the wheel.

The commenters who keep saying the video shows Stewart did it on purpose probably don’t know how sprint cars operate.

    1. Simply turning the steering wheel doesn’t turn a sprint car. You must turn the wheel AND hit the gas to make it turn.

    2. Sprint cars are push started and once they are moving they have to keep moving to remain started. Idle for a sprint car is basically 35 mph. The driver has to hit the gas at slow speeds to keep the car running.

There are several other things that are different about these cars: the braking system is completely different…the wing makes seeing to the right very difficult. I don’t want to write a book here. I’m not a Stewart fan; I actually haven’t had a “favorite” racer since Bobby Allison retired, but there is nothing in that video to indicate Stewart was trying to kick dirt on him or cause him harm. Everything can be easily explained by the nature of the car.
