Lewis Hamilton has said that he is hoping to beat Nico Rosberg when the German is at his very best, believing that this will cause more pain to his teammate in their fight for the 2014 Formula 1 drivers’ championship.
The two Mercedes teammates have been scrapping at the head of the field all season long, with Rosberg currently enjoying an 11-point advantage at the top of the standings.
However, their battle is also taking place off track as psychological mind games come into play. In Hungary, Hamilton flouted team orders when he was asked to let Rosberg through, and ended up finishing ahead of the German.
Although Rosberg said that he has moved on, Hamilton spoke about the incident with the official Formula 1 website, and said that he was happy to be a ‘team player’ to some extent, but not when it compromised his race in that fashion.
“There are different views on what is a team player,” he said. “When it means waving your team mate through, that for sure is not.
“But if team player means to invest in the team, that’s another game. So I want to win, and be the best team player when it means that.”
Hamilton confirmed that he does share data from his car with Rosberg to aid the team, and he feels that winning this way is far more satisfying than if he had a veiled advantage.
“I work with the team,” the Briton said. “I am not hiding anything from Nico. He has all my data. I never, never ever have asked my guys, ‘Don’t show that to Nico’.
“Actually I want him to be at his best, because it is more painful when you are at your best and getting beat. That’s more painful.”
Once again, Hamilton and Rosberg look set to fight over the win at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, but after two mammoth fightbacks in Germany and Hungary, the momentum appears to lie with the Briton.
You can watch tomorrow’s Belgian Grand Prix live on NBCSN from 7.30am ET.
