It’s no secret that Kevin Harvick has struggled since winning the second race of the 2014 Sprint Cup season at Phoenix. But Saturday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway could be where Harvick begins his comeback. He certainly got off on the right foot in Friday evening’s qualifying, being one of 16 drivers to break the 1.366-mile, egg-shaped oval’s track record with a speed of 183.479 to earn the pole for Saturday’s race.

  4. Ryan Newman rockets to top of speed charts (179.167 mph) in Darlington Happy Hour

    Apr 11, 2014, 3:20 PM EDT

Ryan Newman is definitely happy after turning in the fastest speed in Friday's Happy Hour practice at Darlington Raceway.

NASCAR’s rocket man, Ryan Newman, lived up to his nickname in Friday’s Happy Hour final practice for Saturday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. In his first season for Richard Childress Racing, Newman took just nine laps of practice, but his seventh lap was the overall fastest of the entire field at 179.167 mph. No other driver exceeded 179 mph in the one hour session.

  8. Harvick sets new track record in early qualifying at Texas, but Stewart grabs first pole since 2012

tony stewart smoke is the bandit

Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday became the fastest 1.5-mile track for pole qualifying in Sprint Cup history, and Kevin Harvick was the man who did it. But Harvick will not start on the pole in Sunday’s Duck Commander 500. Instead, his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate and boss, Tony Stewart, will take the green flag first.

  9. No worries for Kurt Busch: Takes back-up car to top of speed charts in Saturday’s Sprint Cup practice in Texas

    Apr 5, 2014, 12:28 PM EDT

Kurt Busch recorded the fastest speed in Saturday's final Sprint Cup practice at Texas Motor Speedway, proving he still has momentum from last week's win at Martinsville (above).

Kurt Busch is NASCAR’s version of Mad magazine’s Alfred E. Neuman. When Busch wrecked his primary race car in Friday’s practice at Texas Motor Speedway, the 2004 Sprint Cup champ had confidence in his back-up car and his team. And just like Neuman (no, not Ryan Newman, Busch’s former teammate) infamously says, “What, me worry?”, Busch didn’t worry at all, waiting until the final minute before recording the fastest speed in Saturday’s final pre-qualifying practice.

  10. Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and Dale Earnhardt Jr. fastest in Friday Sprint Cup practice

    Apr 4, 2014, 8:12 PM EDT

Jimmie Johnson, who won last November at Texas, was fastest in Friday's practice session for Sunday's Duck Commander 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

Three drivers who are still chasing their first win of 2014 set the pace during Friday afternoon’s first practice for Sunday’s Duck Commander 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Even though the race has been over for five days now, some Sprint Cup teams are still feeling the after effects of last weekend’s event at Martinsville Speedway. Because they were late to the Sprint Cup qualifying inspection line at Martinsville, 12 teams will be docked 15 minutes of practice from Friday’s evening session at Texas Motor Speedway

  15. UPDATED: Kurt Busch shakes off early-race tangle, holds off Jimmie Johnson to win at Martinsville

Kurt Busch overcame an early-race tangle with Brad Keselowski, and then held off Jimmie Johnson in the final 11 laps to win Sunday’s STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway. The elder Busch brother follows up younger brother Kyle’s win last week at Auto Club Speedway to become the sixth different winner in as many races this season.

  18. Kyle Busch takes first career pole at Martinsville, Denny Hamlin also on front row

    Mar 28, 2014, 6:40 PM EDT

Kyle Busch is closing in on a significant milestone: he needs to lead just 30 laps at Richmond on April 26 to reach 10,000 laps led in his Sprint Cup career. Given that he doesn't turn 29 until early May, Busch conceivably could hit 25,000 or maybe even 30,000 laps led in his career if he continues at his current pace.

It will be a Joe Gibbs Racing front row to start Sunday’s STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway. And while Denny Hamlin – who broke the track’s speed and one-lap elapsed time records earlier in the day in practice – is one of those two JGR drivers on the front row, it will not be on the pole. Last week’s race winner at California, Kyle Busch, continued his momentum by winning the pole for the first time in his career at the .526-mile bullring in southern Virginia.

  19. UPDATED: Denny Hamlin smashes Martinsville track records, promises a win Sunday

    Auto Club 400 - Qualifying

To say Denny Hamlin wanted to prove he’s okay after missing last Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Fontana due to a piece of metal in his eye is putting it mildly. In his first time in a race car since last Saturday’s final practice at Auto Club Speedway, only to miss the actual race itself due to the eye issue, Hamlin shattered both ends of the Martinsville track record during Friday afternoon’s pre-qualifying practice session.
